This car was manufactured in Ohio. Its name comes from its manufacturer (John Stoddard) and the place of manufacture (Dayton). This marquee was manufactured from 1907 until 1914, when it was acquired by Chrysler. It has an engine capacity 5800 cc.
This Double-Tourin Family Model belonged to Pereira Brasil, from Paysandú department (Uruguay). When the owner died the car was acquired by our grandfather, Luis Nan, who registered the car in 1915 with the number I-15 (I = Paysandú, 15 = 1915). This registration is still preserved and valid for this vehicle.
The passage of time has made its mark on this car as it had been used frequently and the evidence of this was clear. The rubber roofs worn, a little flaking painting, but the engine was spotless.
When my father “Bocha” “came of age”, he received this car as a gift. Since he was very little he yearned "irons" and he had a weakness for historical cars so he was so proud to receive this car as a gift. He always listened to his father speak fondly of the excellent mechanical and docile manner in the way the car travelled.
To start the car you should:
1: Prime the carburettor with gasoline; 2: Manually select the ignition switch before the starting handle is used, and 3: two turns of the starting handle and the car should start. Never give more turns as the handle will "kick back".
"Bocha" always told his daughters that it was the "iron" that he loved more because it was a gift from his father.
Not only was it known to many people and made many friends wherever he went but was also his pride that it was restored to the state that it remains today.
One day, "The Montevideo Classic Car Club" invited him to the Montevideo – Punta del Este Rally, which was the only way that you could enter by invitation. At that time, this was the only 1911 Stoddard Dayton in South America.
It is a "Luxury Tourin" named because the 4-doors made of canvas, some special accessories such as bronzes, windshield, running boards with drawers, etc..
In this event the car made many admirers and my father many friends, and as the rally was international, he received invitations from other clubs. This was in the 80s, and his first international rally was in Rosario (ARG). There he realized that the cars involved were the real "jewels" of mechanics, so it was proposed that he restored the Stoddard.
The biggest "tweaks" that were made was in sheet metal work, painted the original colour (Olive Green), keeping the factory door trims and the reupholstering was all new. The original roof was green but it was impossible to get this colour at this time and this had to be imported from Buenos Aires in black. The mechanics were flawless. You could say that achievement left it in all its glory.
It was a car that gave my father much satisfaction, with a very strong feelings and sentiment for him.
